Folio · Art direction

Three directions. One selected.

The blueprint requires a concept gate before implementation: three genuinely different art directions, each attacked by an independent critic, then one frozen. This is that record.

What the site implements

The built site implements direction C, “Drawn to Spec, selected on 2026-07-26. Its design tokens are frozen and every colour, size, radius and duration in the product comes from them.

Chartier is drawn, not photographed: the entire site is one continuous ruled ledger in warm ink on warm stock, where every dish is a hand-inked plate diagram with its portion, hold time and per-person figure written on the rule beside it — the workings are the beauty, so showing them is the design.

The three directions

  • Direction A · rejected

    Bill of Fare

Chartier is a printed bill of fare brought to the screen — one warm ivory page, one antique-gold hairline running as a spine through every layout, and typography doing all the persuading, so the site is at its most expensive precisely where a photograph would have been.

    Independent critic’s verdict: viable

  • Direction B · rejected

    Light on the Pass

Darkness here is a lighting condition, not a colour scheme: one warm source rakes across every screen at a fixed 18 degrees, each element earns its brightness by how close it stands to the work, so hierarchy is literally exposure — and the site needs light, not photographs, to be beautiful.

    Independent critic’s verdict: viable

Why this one won

Direction C ("Drawn to Spec") wins because it is the only one of the three that owns an image world, and every selection criterion in priority order bends toward that fact.

Criterion one — zero photography. Critic A's fatal finding is decisive against A: "a direction that survives having no photography by making photography structurally irrelevant has not solved the constraint, it has amputated the product," and A never designs /gallery or the weddings gallery at all. Critic B lands the same blow harder: "With zero photography, ten public routes become ten instances of one gradient." Both A and B pass the contact-sheet test by declining to sit it. C actually draws something for every dish. Critic C attacks the drawing system correctly — the hash is the art director, 22 glyphs cannot discriminate 40 starches, the circular frame is hostile to real photographs — but every one of those is a defect in the drawing system's *rules*, not proof that a drawing system cannot exist. Rules are what a freeze changes.

Criterion two — 150 dishes. C's ledger with zebra bands every fifth row, sticky category heads carrying folio counts, and expand-in-place spec cards is the strongest 150-item answer submitted. A's list is structurally similar but shows 150 typographically identical rows with no image column and a dietary-tag line that Critic A proved breaks the row-height contract the whole 150 argument depends on. B's lit/dim mechanism is the one Critic B killed arithmetically at 1.10:1 to 1.29:1 — "an information architecture built on a luminance range narrower than human perception."

Criterion three — phone. B scored highest (9.0, the only gate met anywhere in the record) but on a palette that does not render; a 9.0 mobile score sitting on invisible surfaces is a 9.0 for a wireframe. C's mobile deductions are all numeric and fixable: 182px of chrome, a 150-row FLIP, a hidden long-press. I have capped chrome at 148px, capped FLIP at 24 animated rows, and deleted long-press below.

Criterion four — template resistance. All three critics cry "generic," and all three are right about something. But B's signature is a warm screen-blended radial on near-black, which Critic B names as "the most-cloned dark-site treatment of the era" — and it is also the closest of the three to the blueprint's explicitly named failure mode, black + gold + serif, differing mainly by swapping glass for glow. A lands on the Kinfolk book costume. C lands on the engineering-document genre, which is the furthest from both named traps and, unlike the other two, has an authored asset library at its center that a competitor cannot download.

Criterion five — honest ratios. All three submissions published numbers they had not computed; that is the polished-misinformation failure mode turned on the spec sheet. But Critic C explicitly certified the repair path: "this flaw is separable from the accessibility failures, which ARE tunable — a repalette fixes 3.10:1, 1.31:1, 1.17:1 and the 1.01:1 hue-only semantic pair without touching the thesis." Critic B certified the opposite for B: widening the luminance range forfeits the OLED argument that is the thesis. That asymmetry is the deciding technical fact. I have re-derived the entire palette below and every ratio in it is computed, not asserted.

Criterion six — one owner. C's worst maintenance trait is that colour was coupled to governance state, so gold renders nowhere at launch and oxblood spreads as prices go stale. That is a real defect and I have severed it: gold is now a structural brand accent present on day one, and exactly one accent hue carries meaning.

C also ships the two binding requirements the others break. A deletes the flambé scroll-scrub mandated by BLUEPRINT §Motion system and BRIEF §9 and reframes the deletion as discipline — an undocumented removal of a binding requirement. A also refuses cards absolutely, which leaves /menus and its fourteen preset cards with no design at all, and its hero imprint a rejected hero imprint line using the banned word trips scripts/verify-site.mjs:580 on "/" — I confirmed that regex is live in the repository. C ships the scrub mechanism with a real poster frame, and its two-unit rule (cards below 24 items, ledger above) is the only submission that serves both /menus and /build from one system.

C wins on condition. Three of its own doctrines are renounced at this freeze and are as prohibited as anything from A or B: photography subordination, hash-derived art direction, and honesty-as-ornament. Critic C was right that those are doctrines rather than parameters and "have to be renounced, not adjusted, before this direction is safe to select." This is that renunciation.

Prohibited

The blueprint requires recording what elements from the rejected directions are now banned. These are enforced where possible by the token set itself rather than by discipline — there is no shadow token, no radius above 2px, and no translucency anywhere, so several of these are unbuildable rather than merely forbidden.

  1. Any absolute prohibition on cards, and any token set engineered so that a card 'literally cannot be built'

From a/menus requires fourteen preset cards with inclusions, indicative cost per person, minimum logic and service assumptions. A's refusal left that route with no design at all. The frozen system uses cards below 24 items and a ledger above; the anti-warehouse rule is the threshold, not a ban.

  2. A type-only hero with no image, no drawing and no signature moment

From aIt deletes the flambé scroll-scrub mandated by BLUEPRINT §Motion system and BRIEF §9 without a DEVIATIONS.md entry, and it makes photography structurally unwelcome forever.

  3. Roman-numeral plate numbers, folios, thumb index, imprint line and colophon as a full book-apparatus kit

From aCritic A: the standing costume of 'website that looks like a book.' Roman numerals also degrade at catalog scale (dish 147 is CXLVII) and tie a visible ornament to mutable data with no renumbering rule.

  4. The phrase 'Rough estimates, never priced offers' and any other use of the word priced offer outside the three approved strings

From ascripts/verify-site.mjs:580 runs /\bquotes?\b/i against visible text on every route and the plural matches. Verified live in the repository. This is a hard harness failure on the home page.

  5. 'Cooked by one family, for one table at a time' and any copy implying single-table or intimate-counter service

From aChartier's validated range is 50-150 guests on staffed buffet service with 3-7 staff on the floor. Misrepresenting the operation in the largest type on the site is a content-credibility failure.

  6. 'Estd.' or any establishment claim, and a blank EST. panel shipped inside the seal

From a and cRobert has supplied no founding year. Asserting establishment without a date is period-signalling with nothing behind it; shipping a hole in the logo is a project-management gap dressed as a position. The crest simply omits the date panel.

  7. Nested interactive controls — a whole-row <button> containing a caret or expand button

From aInvalid HTML with undefined screen-reader behaviour, on the most-repeated interaction in the product. The frozen row uses one button for select and a separate sibling disclosure control outside it.

  8. Near-black page grounds in the #0B0A09 to #191614 band, and any hierarchy encoded by surface luminance deltas below 1.5:1

From bCritic B computed the whole exposure architecture at 1.10:1 to 1.29:1, below the just-noticeable difference on a mid-range phone in daylight. Hierarchy is never carried by surface brightness in the frozen system.

  9. Black or near-black box-shadow contact shadows on dark grounds, and box-shadow as an elevation system anywhere

From bCritic B: #000 on a ground of luminance 0.00308 is 1.06:1 at maximum density before blur — you cannot cast black onto near-black. The frozen system has no shadow token at all; elevation is a change of paper stock plus a 1px rule.

  10. The full-viewport warm radial gradient with mix-blend-mode: screen driven by scroll opacity

From bCritic B: 'the most-cloned dark-site treatment of the era.' It also encodes no content by its own admission, so it fails the blueprint's requirement of a narrative reason for the signature transition.

  11. Two accent hues that are luminance-identical (the oxblood/olive pair at 1.01:1, and the gold-outline/ember-outline filter tokens at 1.02:1)

From b and cA flat WCAG 1.4.1 failure. Roughly 8% of men cannot distinguish an active filter from a correction bracket. The frozen system ships exactly one meaning-bearing accent hue and it never carries meaning alone.

  12. Back-of-house vocabulary in customer-facing copy — 'the pass', 'the chit', 'the ticket', 'The pass is empty. Start with a main.'

From bCritic B: the operator's private language addressed to a bride spending ten thousand dollars. The blueprint's positioning is intimate hospitality, not industrial kitchen.

  13. A photography grading specification issued as risk mitigation (18-degree key, 3200-3600K, shadows lifted to #17130F, roll-off at 92%)

From bRobert has no camera, no lights and no photographer. It converts every phone snapshot he will actually take from usable into out-of-spec, which is the opposite of de-risking.

  14. Hash-derived or otherwise procedurally chosen image composition

From c (winner) — renounced at freezeCritic C: 'the hash is the art director.' The blueprint assigns art direction to an accountable role and requires images that accurately match the named dish. A hash guarantees consistency and says nothing about accuracy. Composition is now an authored, owner-reviewable field on the dish record.

  15. 'A photo is never given a full-bleed hero' and any structural subordination of photography to drawing

From c (winner) — renounced at freezeBLUEPRINT §Homepage visual direction states 'Photography — Robert's real work first,' and /gallery and /weddings exist to hold it. The drawing is the launch-state occupant of a frame designed to accept a photograph, never a permanent replacement.

  16. Honesty marks used as the dominant recurring motif — fourteen rotated UNAPPROVED stamps over preset prices, 150 rotated PHOTOGRAPH PENDING stamps, struck figures as ornament

From c (winner) — renounced at freezeCritic C: 'a launch site that stamps its own product UNAPPROVED fourteen times satisfies the prohibition on polished misinformation while defeating its north star.' Also, a rotated stamp partially occluding the per-person figure defeats the page's purpose. Honesty is now stated once per artefact class, in plain set type, never rotated and never over a number.

  17. Kalam, or any fourth type family, or any script/handwriting face presented as the owner's hand

From c (winner) — renounced at freezeCritic C: 'It is not Robert's handwriting. It is a free Google Font any competitor installs in four seconds.' Four families in a two-family brief is also a visible discipline failure. Marginalia is now Fraunces italic.

  18. Long-press-to-peek, and any gesture, hover or pointer-only affordance that reveals information

From c (winner) — renounced at freezeNo keyboard or assistive-technology equivalent, collides with iOS text-selection and the Android context menu, and contradicts the same board's ban on hover-only information.

  19. Any type below 13px anywhere in the system, including in-frame metadata labels

From a, b and cAll three shipped 8px, 10px and 0.68rem labels. Below 13px, letterspaced small caps on a textured ground is unreadable on the primary device and drags every associated contrast ratio down.

  20. Backdrop-filter, backdrop blur, translucent panels, rgba-white overlays, gradients on buttons, and any border-radius above 2px

From b (rule salvaged) — now bindingB's single most useful contribution: it converts 'do not look like a luxury template' from an adjective into a stylesheet-verifiable contract. There is no blur, no glass and no pill in the frozen token set.
